On July 1st, Cushnie broke ground on a two-story science and mathematics building designed for “deeper learning” and as a “makerspace” for more advanced education. Cushnie CCI and Island School have had a long standing relationship for the last 30 years and the space will add 10,488 square feet of classroom space to the campus. The new building, which will be located near the athletic field, will house engineering, technology, and advanced
placement classes.

After over 20 inches of rain on March 16th, CCCI received an emergency contract to clean up the Wailua Bridge. Cushnie was doing flood cleanup in the area and owned a unique clamshell attachment needed for the job. Structurally, the Wailua Bridge was in danger due to heavy erosion damage to the concrete reinforced wall.  A 120-foot tree that was swept from upriver was lodged on the side of the bridge, including several other pieces of albizia. After working around the clock for over a week, more debris followed.

Cushnie Construction began the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor Improvement Project on Friday, April 9th, 2021. Improvements to the harbor include a new water main, prefabricated comfort station with an individual wastewater system, resurfacing asphalt pavement, a concrete boat-ramp approach and new boat-ramp concrete panels, and relocating the boat wash-down area and making drainage upgrades. This project is estimated
to be complete in September 2024.

Waterline Repair DAGS.jpg

The DAGS District Office on Kaua‘i pulled out the stops on the Sunday afternoon of the Presidents’ Day holiday to coordinate and provide much-needed repair and maintenance services for Kauaʻi High School. A water line leak discovered on campus could not be isolated, so water service to the entire school needed to be shut off to prevent continued loss of water. However, in order for the school to reopen, water restoration was required for health and safety reasons. Thankfully a local contractor, Cushnie Construction Company, Inc. had a crew ready to perform the emergency repair on Presidents’ Day, and the Kauaʻi Department of Water was available and willing to kōkua. The repairs were made expeditiously so that the students could return to classes the next day. Kudos to the contractor, school, DAGS, and the Department of Water, who worked together so the school could open with no disruption to learning! (contributed by DAGS Kauaʻi District Office)
